Is 1.6mm of tread actually the legal limit?
Yes, 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tyre and around its full circumference is the legal minimum for cars in the UK. Wet grip drops off noticeably before that, so most tyre fitters suggest planning a fresh set of tyres around 3mm rather than running to the limit and risking a tyre problem at the worst moment.
