What causes a DPF to clog up in the first place?

Mostly short journeys. If your driving is school runs and stop-start traffic, the exhaust never gets hot enough to regenerate the DPF and burn off excess soot, so the filter slowly clogs. Faulty sensors, EGR faults and the wrong oil all speed it up. A longer journey at motorway speeds now and then helps, but once the DPF is blocked properly it needs an expert DPF clean, not a drive up the M1.
