What is a DPF and why is my car fitted with one?

Every modern diesel car is fitted with a diesel particulate filter, known as a DPF, which sits in the exhaust and traps the soot and ash produced by a diesel engine. It exists to cut harmful emissions and keep exhaust gases within emissions regulations. When that particulate builds up faster than the car can burn it off, the DPF is blocked and you start seeing problems.
