What is included in a service?
Vehicle services can vary depending on the make, model and type of your vehicle, for example if you have an Electric vehcile the service will differ to that of a strandard petrol engine vehicle. There are different levels of service which, depending on your requirements can start as low £80-£120 for an Interim service up £400+ for Major services (you might see these named differently as all garages provide their own variations).
Every service will include visual inspections for any damage along with checks to brakes, fluid levels and gearbox operation.
Interim Service
It is important to note that an Interim Service is essentially a top-up to a Full or Major service, whilst it is recommended that an Interim Service is carried out every 6000 miles or 6 months this does not cover the in-depth checks that a full service will include e.g. a thorough engine inpection, shock absorders and a screen wash top are not usually included with an Interm Service.
During an Interim Service you can expect the following to be carried out (this can vary depending on the garage):
- Interior: check the dashboard for an warning lights, horn, interior lights, clutch operation (manual vehicles only), seat belts
- Brakes: visual check to ensure they work
- Tyres: tread depth, pressures, wear, speare type if applicable, TPMS valves (if fitted)
- Steering and Suspension
- All fluid levels checked
- Visual checks, including lights, wiper blades, windscreen and bodywork
- Oil and Filter replacement (this varies depending on the provider)
- Service book stamped

Full Service
A full service should be carried out once every 12000 miles or 12 months whichever comes first. This type of service is ideal if you do relatively low mileage and only have your vehicle serviced once a year.
A full service includes all checks from an interim service plus addtional more in-depth checks of the vehicle. This can include but is not limited to:
- Air Conditioning inspection
- Full brake Inspection
- Exahust sytem
- Engine and Transmisson
- Fuel pipes
- Radiator and coolant hoses

Major Service
A Major or "Manufacturers Service" follows the guidance from a manufactuer and includes the replacement of parts required every two years such as the Air Cabin Filter and Brake Fluid. This varies depnding on the manufacturer requirements for your vehicle. It is recommneded that a Major Service is carried out every 2 years to 24000 miles whichever comes first.
With a Major Service, when your Service book is stamped this can help to add value to your vehicle should you ever come to sell it demostrating that the vehcile has had a full health check.
